Hi I’m Emily. I’m a mural artist based in the Midlands UK.

I haven’t always been an artist. In fact I used to be an engineer designing inhalers and vacuum cleaners if you can believe it! In 2018 I had a bit of an existential crisis. I couldn’t bare to contribute to the mass manufacture of plastic products anymore, many of which would eventually end up in landfill. I was feeling pretty low at work and wasn’t sure how I could afford to quit…but I had to put my health and happiness first. I quit! I managed to get a loan, a part time job at a garden centre (even though I struggle to keep even the hardiest house plants alive) and enrolled on an MA in illustration. For the next 2 years I indulged in art and explored how to create eye catching compositions. I graduated with a first class honours.

Then came the pandemic! The company I worked for couldn’t extend my contract so I got a job with one of the few people who were hiring at the time and became a GP receptionist (if you called me during that time I was learning how to say no in gentle ways). It was a good time for me though as that is the moment I first started painting murals. I gave the bathroom wall of my rental flat a colourful makeover and caught the mural painting bug. Since then I’ve gone bigger and better, my largest mural to date covers 20 metres at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital A&E. I hope you never get to see it :)

Today my mission is to show you the power of murals.

More than just decoration, I’ve seen first hand the power of murals as a vessel for community.
